Windows 8.1 IE 11 Flashes then closes

windows-8

One of the big differences between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 is that 8 has IE 10 and 8.1 has IE11. It's also not possible to remove IE11 from Windows 8.1 it's too integrated into the OS.

Internet Explorer 10 and 11 both have enhanced protected mode and enable 64-bit processes for enhanced protected mode but in IE 11 they are ON by default.

I've noticed that many browser add-ons are not compatible with IE11 including the McAfee script proxy; which scans webpage scripts for viruses and malware. It also looks like you need to have administrator privileges to disable an add-on. I noticed no issues when logging in as administrator but once a user account is used then IE will no longer open. It just flashes and disapears.

Once you have the problem, you can't get to the internet options from IE anymore, good thing they can be accesssed from the control panel.

Open your control panel and go to internet options, go to the advanced tab, find the security section and uncheck the enable enhanced protected mode and  enable 64-bit processes for enhanced protected mode, this will resolve the problem for that user.

In order to fix this for all users, you could use group policy to disable this option.

If you wanted to do it with a reg file....Save the reg file below as "disable enhanced proctected mode.reg"

--------------------start cut   -------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]

"Isolation64Bit"=dword:00000000
"Isolation"="PMIL"

-------------------end cut  ----------------------

and to enable it.....just in case

If you wanted to do it with a reg file....Save the reg file below as "enable enhanced proctected mode.reg"
