Converting Virtual Box VM to Hyper-V VM (VDI to VHD)
OK well I'm in the process of converting now so thought I would document it a little since it was a little tricky to get started.
First of all I've been using virtualbox version 4.0.4 which could matter.
Step one of the conversion process is to delete all of your snapshots. Theses are stored using diferencing disks and will prevent you from converting. From the VM manager click snapshots in the top right and select the VM. If there are snapshots right click on them and click delete, then ok.
When all you see is Current State then you are good to start the conversion.
Open a command prompt and browse to your virtual box program folder (C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox) so you can use the vboxmanage.exe command or just use the full path.
Create a folder to store your new vhd let use newVHD as an example, the source can be old.vdi
Now run the following command adjusted for your file names and paths.
vboxmanger.exe internalcommands converthd -srcfromat vdi "C:\original\old.vdi" -dstformat vhd "C:\newVHD\new.VHD"
It will take some time but when it is complete you should be able to use the VHD with hyper-v as an existing hard disk. I'm converting the webserver now, so this article will have to be reposted if it works. I'll update accordingly.
AND NOW THE UPDATE****
Coming to you live from a Hyper-V virtual machine. My thanks to Google for actually having a cached copy of the beginning part....I hadn't thought that part thru in advance..
The conversion of the Ubuntu Virtual box VM to Hyper-V was flawless except it complained the floppy drive was missing . Oh well...i can live with that.
The conversion of the pfsense vdi to VHD worked fine but the system would not boot. I suspect that with a lot of tinkering it "may" have been possible to get it working but considering the configuration of pfsense is easily imported and exported I didn't try. I simply re-installed pfsense in a new vm, with legacy network adapters, and imported my saved config.
I don't have any real need to convert any of my Windows virtual box VMs to Hyper-V but if I get time I will give it a try just as a test.
